Here's a quick update from my side:
Forget about using the API to interact with stories—it’s likely to trigger spam alerts now. Other actions don't seem to cause much trouble.
Following and unfollowing is tricky these days, especially in the last 4 months. If you follow or unfollow more than 30 people a day, you're likely to get blocked, even if you do it manually or through an app. Some accounts with higher trust levels might handle fewer than 20 without issues, but it's risky.
Liking posts seems to be tolerated, possibly because Instagram doesn't want to totally kill engagement on the platform. You can like a lot—up to 400-500—but it's time-consuming, and you might need a dedicated device to manage a couple of accounts. However, liking doesn't seem to bring many new followers. To get good results, your account content and targeting must be perfect; even then, only a few accounts out of ten might grow by a modest 5-12 followers a day.
Viewing and liking stories from a phone or manually-operated accounts might get flagged for spam, especially if your account is new or has fewer than a couple hundred followers. Other accounts with more trust might be safe for now, but it's hard to know how long that will last.
Overall, the days of easy growth on Instagram are definitely gone. The results are smaller and less impressive. It's a lot harder now, and you need a bigger budget depending on your strategy. Random blocks are common, especially with following. In the coming months, maybe Instagram will remove the spam flag issue because even real users are getting flagged. They added a "Mark as Not Spam" option, suggesting they know there are errors. It would be great if they relaxed the follow limits and blocks, but with the 2024 U.S. elections coming up, it's likely to get even tougher to prevent spam and bots.
With over 8 years of experience in this, here's my advice: don't let all the stress make you sick. Work hard while you can, and as long as your customers are happy and you're making money, keep going. But start planning for something more stable, so a sudden change or update doesn't destroy the business you've spent years building.
P.S.: The only thing that still works and delivers surprisingly good results is sending mass direct messages (DMs), but it's costly and not something you can easily do on your own.
