I think Pinterest also lets you schedule posts now.

I'm not entirely sure. Whenever I've had success on Pinterest, it was mostly through manual pinning.

I don't believe there's a significant difference unless Pinterest has a preference for its own native scheduling tool or feature. Even then, I doubt it makes much of a difference.

They were reluctant to provide details, but the answer is YES—there is an upsell. It's an extra $97 to upgrade to the 'Pro' version, which you need for features like automatically unfollowing people who don't follow you back. This is basic functionality, so it feels like a bait-and-switch tactic. In contrast, the support for Ninja Pinner is significantly better. I haven't used it yet, but they claim it receives regular updates and recommend using dedicated static proxies, one per account.
