I have a query regarding patents. We received approval for our patent, but now our attorney has proposed a second "continuation" patent. I'd appreciate hearing from those with relevant experience to determine if pursuing a second patent is worthwhile. For context, our patent relates to utility/technology in the eCommerce industry. I have compiled a list of advantages and disadvantages to aid in the decision-making process.

Advantages:

  • Offers additional protection to safeguard my intellectual property.
  • Allows me to add extra claims to the patent in case of similar inventions or products in the market.
Disadvantages:

  • Even if I observe something similar, it may not be beneficial since I cannot access their code to verify infringement.
  • Researching other patents online is a laborious and time-consuming task, and it distracts me from working on my own idea.
  • Acquiring a second patent can be costly, and the funds could be more useful in maintaining our server.
I have only one week to respond, so I'm eagerly seeking opinions from others on whether it's worthwhile to proceed with the second patent or just settle for the original one and commemorate the accomplishment with a drink!

Thank you.
