Are Instagram Reels truly worthwhile? How can one craft and share reels to enhance their outreach?

Instagram currently heavily favors reels in terms of algorithmic promotion, potentially skyrocketing your exposure, boosting engagement with increased likes and comments, and aiding in expanding your follower count.

Reels offer heightened visibility for your profile; even non-followers can view your 15- to 90-second videos, interact with them, peruse your profile, and potentially become followers.

Now, let's delve into the fundamentals. Many inquire about the essence of reels and how they differ from stories. Reels, distinct from stories, aren't limited to your followers; they're showcased in your followers' feeds and are now actively promoted by Instagram, making them an optimal tool for reaching new audiences. Unlike stories, reels endure beyond 24 hours, remaining on your profile permanently, akin to regular posts.

Here are some pointers for crafting outstanding reels:

When seeking inspiration for your reels, consider exploring viral TikTok content. Observing TikTok trends increases the likelihood of success on Instagram. However, merely duplicating TikTok videos, even with alterations, is no longer permissible on IG. Instead, leverage viral audio or trends from TikTok to create original content, such as incorporating popular rap music or dances into your videos. While IG discourages direct transformation of TikTok content into reels, you can create the video on TikTok and then upload it to IG without the TikTok logo. While opinions vary on the effectiveness of TikTok-inspired reels, exploring and adapting viral content can enhance your results on IG. When utilizing existing content for reels, you have two options: recreate using viral audio or repost relevant content within your niche while crediting the original creator. Additionally, seek inspiration from others in your niche without directly copying their content, as adapting successful strategies can help maximize your IG reach when tailored to your own content. Note that not every viral TikTok trend will guarantee increased IG reach, but strategic adaptation can optimize your results.

  1. Consistency is key when posting reels, so aim to maintain a regular schedule. Whether it's twice a week, every other day, daily, or even multiple times a day, the frequency of your posts increases your chances of algorithmic recognition. Establish a posting routine for your reels just as you do for other content. While it may seem daunting at first, creating 15- to 90-second videos becomes easier with practice. Consider preparing scripts in advance, including music, context, and lines, and saving them in your archive for future use. This allows for easier editing and posting later on.
  2. Craft engaging captions with valuable tips and tricks to enhance audience interaction and reel engagement. A compelling caption significantly increases the likelihood of viewers engaging with and saving your reel, which positively impacts the Instagram algorithm. While a good video may capture attention, it's the combination of captivating visuals and an enticing caption that encourages engagement, shares, and saves. By presenting content that resonates with many users, Instagram is more likely to promote your reel to the Explore page, where it can garner a substantial number of likes and comments.
  3. Selecting the appropriate cover text is crucial; it grabs the attention of your audience and sets the tone for your reel. For instance, if you're in the fitness or weight loss industry and create a reel showcasing low-calorie coffee drinks, a cover text like "Coffee to Go Under 100 Calories" will likely attract more viewers than leaving the cover text blank or using random text. Remember the adage, "the first impression is crucial"? This applies to IG reels too. Choose the image you want to display before your video starts by utilizing the cover selection option when uploading your IG reel. Opting to upload a custom image from your camera enables you to create original covers that better complement your reel.
    5. Evaluate the performance of your reel and capitalize on its success. If your reel outperforms your average posts, continue in the same vein rather than reverting to regular posting. Instead, craft similar reels and share them in the near future. With reels, it's not just your followers who view your content; in fact, new audiences are likely to discover and engage with it, broadening your reach and engagement.

    6. Capitalize on broad trends within Instagram by simply scrolling through the reels feed, where you'll encounter recurring post types and audio. These overarching trends are opportunities you should seize. Whether you adapt them to fit your niche or embrace them without niche specificity, depending on your account type (e.g., personal or beauty influencer), taking advantage of these trends can boost your visibility and engagement.

    7. Consider the duration of your IG reels, which can range from 15 seconds to 90 seconds, though the latter may not be available in all countries or on all phone models within a country. However, research suggests that the most viral IG reel posts typically fall within the 7-11 second range. While this doesn't imply that you should exclusively create reels of this length, it's essential to experiment with different durations—10 seconds, 15 seconds, 30 seconds—and gauge their impact on reach and engagement. If you're operating a business account and wish to provide valuable tips to potential clients, a 7-second video may not suffice. Determine the optimal length for your content to maximize its effectiveness within those precious seconds.
    1. Produce your reels using the editing options available on Instagram or utilize third-party apps for filming and editing. Whether you opt for the in-app tools provided by Instagram or third-party applications, you gain greater control and customization over the creation and editing process. This enhanced flexibility enables you to unleash your creativity and craft more polished and professional reels.
How to create reels using the Instagram app? You can access the creation process through several methods:
    1. Open the app, swipe from left to right to access the IG camera, then select "Reels" from the options at the bottom.
    2. Open the app, tap the "+" button in the upper right corner, then choose "Reels" from the menu at the bottom.
    3. Open the app and select the dedicated "Reels" button located in the center at the bottom of the screen.image1.webp
    4. image 2.webp
    5. image 3.webp
    6. Once you've created your video, you'll find a preview button. Review it and click "next" to access new features. You can opt to share it on your Feed, crop, tag people, rename audio, add a location or fundraiser, and recommend it on Facebook. If you have a video in your gallery, simply navigate to Reels and tap the "+" button located at the bottom left. This allows you to import your video, ensuring it's the appropriate length for Reels. Additionally, you'll have access to the same features as when using Instagram Stories, including the ability to add text, stickers, GIFs, effects, voiceovers, and music.
For a more professional touch, consider utilizing third-party apps such as FilMiC Pro for creating your reels or VN Video Editor, CapCut (free version available), Kinemaster, or Lumafusion for editing. Please note that I'm not affiliated with these apps, and this is not a commercial endorsement. These are simply some tools that I've discovered and found effective for my own use.
Common errors to avoid when crafting and sharing reels:
    1. Neglecting pop-up text: It's essential to incorporate pop-up text into your reels. Given that reels initially play muted, pop-up text serves as a crucial tool for conveying your video's message, ensuring comprehension regardless of whether viewers have their sound on. By captivating their attention and outlining the value they'll gain from watching, you enhance the likelihood of them watching the entire reel and potentially following you.
    2. Misplacing text: Text misplacement often occurs when editing outside the Instagram app, as there are no guidelines to indicate the reel's dimensions. This can result in text being cut off at the top or bottom, or obscured by captions, likes, or comments, frustrating your viewers. To avoid this, consider adding or adjusting text within the app itself. If you're proficient enough to estimate the text box dimensions, you can do so in your editing app, but always double-check before posting to ensure optimal visibility.
    3. Overusing text: Using excessive text is a common mistake observed in many reels. Pop-up text should be concise and easy to read, allowing viewers sufficient time to digest the information before it disappears. Bombarding viewers with too much text can be overwhelming and may deter them from watching your reels altogether. Strive for clarity and brevity to maintain viewer engagement and interest.
      1. Excessive cropping: Instagram Reels are optimized for a 9:16 ratio, with dimensions of 1080 pixels (width) by 1920 pixels (height), mirroring the format of IG Stories. However, when displayed in the newsfeed, reels adopt a 4:5 ratio, known as portrait, with dimensions of 1080 pixels by 1035 pixels. This results in a 15% cropping at both the top and bottom of your reel. It's crucial to ensure that any text remains within these dimensions and that your content, including your head, remains fully visible without being cropped. Additionally, consider the reel thumbnails: one appears in your profile gallery as a square (1:1 aspect ratio), while the other appears in the IG Reels Gallery as a 9:16 ratio. Paying attention to these size specifications ensures that your video, along with any accompanying text, fits well across all platforms. Given that viewers decide within seconds whether to engage with your reel, these minor details, such as text placement and visual cropping, significantly impact the viewer's initial impression.
      2. Staying within your niche: Focus on creating reels within your niche. Identify and establish your primary niche, then explore 2-3 sub-niches within that area to create your content. For instance, if your niche is IG Marketing, potential sub-niches could include IG Growth, Engagement, Business Strategy, or Brand Collaboration. By consistently posting content within these sub-niches, you make it easier for Instagram to categorize your account and promote your content to the appropriate audience. Posting reels that deviate from your niche may hinder your growth. For example, sharing a reel of you relaxing on vacation with a viral audio could mislead viewers about your expertise in growing IG. Instead, consider incorporating relevant tips within the reel to maintain engagement with your niche audience while also catering to broader interests. This approach ensures that viewers appreciate the travel aspect of your reel while still finding valuable information related to your niche, potentially leading to increased engagement, profile visits, and followers.
        1. Chasing virality: Focusing solely on achieving viral status without considering your audience is a recipe for failure. While you may be inspired by a viral video, pause and assess its relevance to your niche and ongoing content. Consistency is key; if your feed predominantly features cardiology-related posts and suddenly shifts to banana bread or cryptocurrency, confusion among your viewers is inevitable. They may struggle to comprehend your content's overarching theme and are unlikely to engage or follow as a result.
        2. Video quality: Instagram utilizes its compression algorithms to adapt videos to its dimensions. Ensure to remove any logos, excluding those on attire. This includes logos from TikTok or other editing apps used in video creation. Invest in a high-quality camera and pay attention to previously discussed dimensions. Prior to recording your reel, conduct test shots to gauge lighting, sound quality, and background suitability. You don't want distracting elements or poor lighting overshadowing your presence or disrupting the reel's visual appeal.
        3. Overanalyzing: Reels need not be flawless or viral. Avoid overthinking the process; instead, embrace imperfection and spontaneity. It's acceptable not to have an immediate idea for an audio you've come across multiple times. Save it for later and trust that inspiration will strike when the time is right.
          1. Incorporating a Call To Action (CTA): Failure to include CTAs such as "Follow for more IG tips," "Follow me for part 2," or "Like and follow if you agree" can hinder your ability to attract and retain new followers through IG reels. While the primary aim of your reels is to entice new followers, it's equally important to retain them. Including a CTA prompts viewers to explore your profile further, signaling that there's additional valuable content available.
Why aren't your reels attracting new followers?
Are you posting reels almost daily yet still dissatisfied with your follower count? Here are some key factors to consider:
          • Your conversion rate: How do you determine your conversion rate? There's a simple formula to calculate it, which I'll share with you:
(Number of follows in the last 30 days : Number of profile visits in the last 30 days) x 100 = Conversion rate
          For example, if you've gained 1000 new followers and had 5000 profile visits in the last 30 days: (1000 : 5000 = 0.2) x 100 = 20% - This is your conversion rate.
While there's no strict rule, a conversion rate of 10% or higher is considered excellent. If your rate falls below 10%, it could be one reason why your reels aren't contributing to your growth. Focus on strategies to increase your conversion rate to enhance your reel's effectiveness in driving follower growth.
          • Are you consistently posting quality content? Establish a schedule and stick to it. Don't expect miraculous results after posting just 10 reels. Your IG growth could skyrocket at reel number 50 when more people discover your content. Keep posting!
          • Are you maintaining topical consistency? It's crucial to choose a niche for your account, even for personal ones. For instance, if you love to travel and have captivating vacation videos, use them to create reels and research relevant hashtags like #travelling. Engaging with people in your niche increases the likelihood of them following you. However, if you post fashion-related content but your bio and overall content aren't fashion-oriented, potential followers may hesitate to follow you. While variety is beneficial, focusing on a niche or sub-niche can expedite growth as people within the same niche are more likely to engage and follow.
          • Account audit: Take a critical look at your account. Can visitors easily discern what you do, what you aspire to be known for, and the value you provide? Is it clear from your profile why people should follow you? Consider whether your account reflects your expertise, such as offering meditation tips or being a nutritionist and fitness coach. Ask yourself: Would you follow your own account?
Lastly, don't overlook the potential to earn money through IG Bonuses with reels. This feature is available for business and creator accounts in select countries. Earnings vary based on the Reels Play Bonus received. Some users have reported receiving $1,200 for 1 million views and up to $35,000 for 58 million views by the end of 2021. These tips have proven effective for me and my clients in expanding communities and boosting engagement. I hope you find them useful and give them a try. Now that you've taken the time to read through, I imagine you're eager to test these strategies on your IG app. Remember, IG reels offer a prime opportunity for growth, so why not make the most of it?image 4.webp

    3. Open the app and select the dedicated "Reels" button located in the center at the bottom of the screen.View attachment 38178

    5. View attachment 38180
Remember, IG reels offer a prime opportunity for growth, so why not make the most of it?View attachment 38181

Today, I uploaded two videos on a brand-new account with zero followers. The first received 2,000 views, and the second hit 3,000, but I only gained three followers. I also shared a video on TikTok, which got close to 1,000 views. Not bad for the first day!

1. Incorporating a Call To Action (CTA): Failure to include CTAs such as "Follow for more IG tips," "Follow me for part 2," or "Like and follow if you agree" can hinder your ability to attract and retain new followers through IG reels.
Remember, IG reels offer a prime opportunity for growth, so why not make the most of it?View attachment 38181

"Is there a way to estimate how many followers you might gain from reels? I've posted several with many views, but I'm not sure if it's really worth it."
